However, we viewed it as a wild waste of water. We refused to churn through millions of gallons of water per day, especially since we build data centers in communities like Texas and Arizona, where water is a precious resource. Instead, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.compassdatacenters.com\/data-center-cooling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">used air cooling<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div\n   \n  class=\"compass-block cta-banner alignfull has-grey-background-color\"\n>\n  <div class=\"cta-banner__content\">\n<div class=\"group-basic cta-banner__header\">\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data Center Cooling: From Inception to New Technologies<\/h3>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"group-basic cta-banner__description\">\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discover the evolution of data center cooling, from early methods to cutting-edge liquid cooling technologies driving sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<a \n   \n  class=\"btn is-style-solid-icon is-style-solid-icon\"\n  href=\"https:\/\/www.compassdatacenters.com\/data-center-cooling\/\" \n  target=\"_blank\"\n>\n  <span>Read More<\/span>\n<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, in our continuous improvement culture, as AI drives a surge in demand for data storage and processing, we find ourselves reconsidering cooling. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/insights\/articles\/AI-poised-to-drive-160-increase-in-power-demand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI models require enormous amounts of power<\/a> to serve the computing capacity they demand. Gartner estimates that by the end of 2024, machine-generated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2023-08-01-gartner-identifies-top-trends-shaping-future-of-data-science-and-machine-learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">synthetic data<\/a> will comprise 60% of the data used in AI-training.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Compass, we\u2019re well on our way to providing hyperscalers a secure place to plug in to this new reality. Because we\u2019ve always been a company that looks to the future, we\u2019ve built our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.compassdatacenters.com\/design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">processes and designs to be highly flexible<\/a>. Our modular design, standard kit parts and longstanding relationship with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.compassdatacenters.com\/compass-datacenters-and-vertiv-a-sound-solution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vertiv, our cooling partner,<\/a> means we can meet our tenants\u2019 evolving needs in this new reality even faster.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Too many cooks in the kitchen: how AI impacts data center cooling<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, data centers primarily store <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/computer-science\/central-processing-unit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">central processing units (CPUs)<\/a>. CPUs are like the head chef in a kitchen, serving as the main processor that can handle a wide variety of tasks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techtarget.com\/searchvirtualdesktop\/definition\/GPU-graphics-processing-unit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Graphics processing units (GPUs)<\/a>, on the other hand, are like sous chefs who focus on more specific tasks, quickly whisking, chopping and tossing massive amounts of specialized data.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A single AI language model can <a href=\"https:\/\/therealdeal.com\/magazine\/national-november-2023\/texas-booms-in-the-cloud-and-on-the-ground\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">require 1E12 (that\u2019s one million million) data points<\/a>. GPUs, which are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdxcentral.com\/articles\/feature\/why-data-centers-need-liquid-cooling-for-ai-compute-and-hpc\/2024\/01\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">necessary for AI models<\/a>, therefore expend large amounts of energy, which creates a lot of heat in the kitchen.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After spending too much time in that hot kitchen, those sous chefs would need to cool down. But cooling GPUs isn\u2019t as simple as cooling CPUs. Stepping outside for some fresh air on a 70-degree Fahrenheit night would be refreshing. But jumping into a 70-degree Fahrenheit pool will cool them down <em>a lot <\/em>faster.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This illustrates why liquid cooling can be more efficient than air cooling in the AI era. The density of water surrounds the device that needs to be cooled, effectively lowering its temperature very quickly.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Substituting ingredients for the best recipe: flexibility, by design<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of our data centers still use air cooling today. But our standard kit of parts means we can easily substitute new solutions and do it fast. This flexibility will enable customers to customize equipment within the data hall as more GPUs enter the mix.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we transition to liquid cooling to meet the needs of our customers, sustainability is still top of mind. While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.informationweek.com\/it-infrastructure\/what-is-liquid-cooling-and-how-can-it-help-data-centers-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">liquid cooling is more energy-efficient<\/a> than air cooling, it still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/why-ai-so-thirsty-data-centers-use-massive-amounts-water-1882374\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">uses a significant amount of water<\/a>. We\u2019ve always been committed to minimizing our impact on communities\u2019 water resources. That\u2019s why we will only use a closed-loop system that does not allow the water to evaporate.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a closed-loop system, the system only needs to be filled once. Water is pumped outside, where heat exchangers and chillers still use air to cool it, without any form of evaporation. We treat water with alcohol and glycol to prevent it from freezing in the winter so we can use it continuously.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking to the future: hybrid cooling systems&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As data centers adapt as technology evolves, the only thing certain is that things will continue to change. For example, we may see a future where a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datacenterknowledge.com\/cooling\/hybrid-cooling-the-bridge-to-full-liquid-cooling-in-data-centers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hybrid approach to cooling<\/a> is the norm, with some racks of GPUs paired with CPUs for maximum efficiency. While high-powered chips needed for AI might require liquid cooling, other components could remain air-cooled. That\u2019s why we\u2019ve always approached data center development through the lens of long-term flexibility, continuous improvement and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.compassdatacenters.com\/data-center-esg-how-we-are-forging-a-reliable-sustainable-and-inclusive-digital-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sustainability<\/a>. When changes come, we\u2019re ready to accommodate our customers, now and into the future.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever the future holds, we\u2019re committed to
